it states that the alternative audition requirement is to play 3 pieces of the candidate's own choice. Does it means that if I choose to play 3 pieces of my own choice, then I do not need to prepare the orchestral excerpts?

The alternative audition requirements that you mentioned are for Wind/Brass and Percussion only, due to popular demand. Candidates may choose any three pieces of their own choice demonstrating their best abilities. We have successful candidates in the past auditions doing one of these options:

1. played all orchestral excerpts (and one piece of own choice) as set out in the audition brochure.

2. played 3 pieces of the candidate’s own choice, and no orchestral excerpts.

3. played some of the orchestral excerpts as set, supplemented with orchestral excerpts of his/her own choice, together with a piece of his/her own choice (e.g. concerto)

In a nutshell, the audition is an opportunity for the candidate to let us know what he or she is capable of. The set requirements can serve as a guideline of demonstrating what we are looking for. In other words, if you choose to play 3 pieces of your own choice and no orchestral excerpts, it would be a perfectly legitimate option.
